CATCH WRESTLING: The Mixed Martial Arts of Grappling
One of the most successful lies told by the martial arts community is that “most fights go to the ground“, while the evidence actually shows it’s a minority of fights. You HAVE TO be able to stand up and fight first, but when it is time to hit the ground we turn to Catch Wrestling.
“The philosophy also is that if you’re competent at fighting that actually decreases the probability that you’re going to have to fight because when someone pushes you you’ll be able to respond with confidence, and with any luck, and this is certainly the case with bullies, with any luck a reasonable show of confidence, which is very much equivalent to a show of dominance, is going to be enough to make the bully back off. “

*Open Mat is members only. Open Mat is not a class, it is an opportunity to use the facility. People often misunderstand the concept of “open mat”. Open Mat, in the regular schedule, is an additional 30 minutes of facility use tacked on to the end of class. This means that you can grab a peer and get some extra reps, perhaps even spar, or you can use the weight room, or other equipment. The instructor may or may not be available during this period. We may also use the term to refer to public events of a similar nature, but that may have a mat fee for non-members.
TUITION**
Monthly: $80
Drop-In: $10/class
When I was young, my dad told me, “If they don’t state the price, it’s too expensive.” People who hide their pricing are trying to sell you. They believe they have to manipulate you to make a sale. We don’t believe in that here. We believe you’re a capable adult who can make decisions for yourself without having to be conned by a carnival barker. The same philosophy goes for contracts. We believe that it is unethical to legally bind someone to payment for something they are not using, or no longer want.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FAQ – Can I just come in and use the weight room?
-currently suspended- If you are a member and would like to come in during regular operating hours to exercise and use the weight room, you are welcome to. Please be an adult about it, and refrain from taking unnecessary risks while using our facility, or being otherwise disruptive to any ongoing classes. This isn’t the ego lifting palace, it is a place to build athletes.
FAQ – But what is the Black Sun?
No, it doesn’t have anything to do with the eclipse or anything else already established. It’s just a play on Sifu Sol’s name. Solomon shortens to Sol, which is Latin for “sun” and Blake, while of uncertain origin, likely goes back to English or French, meaning “black” or “white” respectively. We went with Black because it’s Rock’n’Roll.
The Black Sun Boxing Sun Shield logo is just a call back to noble heraldry, and the shield represents that martial arts are protection of life, liberty and property. The sun has atomic rings as a symbol of both our nerdy origins, and the concept of fusion, or even the alchemical change of components from a base material into something new and transcendent. It is a symbol of our approach to martial arts being more scientific and open, rather than dogmatic. The rocker patch style of the rest of the logo is just a stylistic choice to show that we’re more of a club than a school.
While we’re at it, the colors could be called “black and orange (and gold)” but that’s boring. The colors are Coffee and Whiskey. Blacks and Charcoals and Browns, Ambers and Golds. The colors are Iron, Bronze, and Gold, the foundations of human society. But most importantly, the colors aren’t red, the most obnoxious color in existence. Red is for communists.
FAQ – Why don’t you teach kids?
Children and pre-teens require a level of safety and simplicity that we are not prepared to meet. While we do try to keep head trauma down for all of our students, it is the nature of combat sports and combat preparedness in general that you must be exposed to it in some measure. Because children have not had a chance to develop their brains fully, we believe it is best not to expose them to this kind of training. There is also the general matter of maturity and attention span, and deeply nuanced and complex material will be challenging enough for them that the instructors will have to simplify it to a level that does not meet our current standards.
Kids need a place to go that is set up to serve them properly, and our recommendation is to enroll them in the local school wrestling program. If they prefer a striking art, then most taekwondo or karate schools have adapted to train kids with very limited contact sparring, and high energy, entertaining classes. These programs will get them the athletics and discipline they need, while being able to cater to them specifically. Sorry for any inconvenience.
FAQ – Why Don’t You Offer Private Lessons?
We firmly believe that outside of a very narrow set of circumstances, private lessons make for worse results, and worse results that we have to charge a premium for. When you order a private lesson, you are occupying the teacher’s time and energy, and possibly the facility, exclusively. This means they must charge a premium to compensate for lack of other business opportunity, or loss of personal time. But what makes it so much worse than attending classes is that the instructor must be involved in the drills with you, which means their attention is going to be split between performing and coaching. They will also not be able to have the valuable third-party view of all angles, or be able to use certain tactile coaching techniques. This means that critical details may be missed, ultimately robbing the student of proper instruction.
